This story easily could have been an awful tragedy, but thankfully it turned into a happy ending. Nisel, the dog, fell into a partially frozen pond and was unable to get out.
Lucky for him Officer Robert Voorhees from the Hopewell Township Police Department, New Jersey was on the scene an was able to save the day.
The entire rescue was caught on video by the officer’s body camera. In the video we can see that the officer ties a rope around his waist as an anchor to protect himself.
Then we can see the officer carefully crawl across the frozen pond. This was particularly dangerous because the pond was on partially frozen. Even though the officer knew that there was a chance that he could have fallen into the frozen pond too he continued.
Once Officer Voorhees reaches the edge of the pond he reaches out to Nisel. The dog calmly swims towards the officer was able to grab her and pull her by the collar to safety.
Other officers on the scene were able to pull both Officer Voorhees and Nisel to safety. The poor doggie didn’t suffer any serious injuries.
The owner who was extremely grateful hugged and repeatedly thanked Officer Voorhees for saving her dog, and reuniting them.
This was an incredibly brave act by Officer Voorhees to risk his life to save Nisel during the winter in a partially frozen pond. Had the ice given way the officer could have suffered hypothermia or worse.
It is very satisfying to see this incident have a happy ending.
