A dog and a woman were both victims and survivors of domestic abuse, and since they had similar life experiences, they were able to form a beautiful and loving bond and found comfort in each other. Melissa Dohme had escaped an abusive relationship in 2012 after her boyfriend stabbed her 32 times. Most of the stab wounds she got were on her face.
Khalessi, on the other hand, was severely abused as she was used as a bait dog. She lost half of her face because of the ordeal she went through. She was left on a lawn, and the woman who saw her immediately called the Orange County Animal Services so she could be brought to the shelter. She was given medical care, and even though nobody knew what happened to her, it was evident that she had been abused her entire life.
Khalessi only weighed 20 pounds, and she was missing a nasal cavity and some parts of her upper jaw. She could barely walk because of a broken back, hind legs, and ribs. Stephanie Paquin, director and founder of Passion 4 Pits and her husband Mike Fleurywre were supposed to pick up a dog at the Orange County shelter when the manager asked them if they wanted to take home a dog with special needs.
The shelter workers already warned them about Khalessi’s appearance, but they were still shocked when they saw her. When Khalessi interacted with them, they were surprised by the dog’s happy and friendly personality. Her tail didn’t stop wagging, and it might have been a sign that she was glad to find a foster family.
The two were able to meet when Lisa Otto, a professional photographer, brought them together for a photoshoot. Melissa Dohme became stronger because of her rough past, and she wouldn’t let anyone keep her or Khalessi down. Melissa and Khalessi wanted to give hope to all victims of domestic abuse through their special photoshoot.
