Alicia Copping and Natasha White live in Coventry, U.K. The couple are dog breeders, and own an Irish Red Setter named Romy. Romy was pregnant and her stomach was bulging. This is the incredible story of Romy’s amazing delivery.
Natasha and Alicia knew that Romy was going to be expecting a large litter of puppies because of her huge bulging stomach. But, nothing could have prepared the two for what would happen the night of the actual delivery.
Alicia is a police officer and Natasha works as a veterinary nurse. The two share the hobby of dog breeding. Both ladies are approved Kennel Club dog breeders. Natasha also volunteers to help an organization that breeds guide dogs for the blind. The ladies are huge dog lovers.
The ladies were over joyed when they found out that Romy was pregnant. Of course they were curious to know how many puppies they would be expecting at birth so they took Romy to the vet at about the midpoint of her pregnancy. At the vet’s office a scan was done of Romy and seven puppies were visible. However, looking at the scans it is difficult sometimes to get a precise number of puppies. The two watch the next few weeks as Romy’s tummy continued to grow larger.
Seven puppies is definitely a reasonable amount of puppies for a litter. Irish Red Setters average somewhere between 8 – 10 puppies.
The ladies did start to worry however once they noticed that Romy’s stomach was getting abnormally large, and she was having difficulty getting comfortable. By the end of her pregnancy she was so large that she looked like a small cow with udders. In the final week of her pregnancy Romy didn’t move much. She just laid on her side. This worried her owners, and they began to think that Romy was much too large for just seven puppies.
Once the day of the birth of the puppies finally came Romy just continued to deliver babies. Once she got to 10 puppies her belly was still massive, and you could feel the other babies moving around inside her. Romy was exhausted from birthing so many puppies. In order to energize her for the remaining deliveries Natasha took Romy for a walk outside. The fresh air seemed to invigorate Romy enough that she was able to give birth to the last few remaining puppies. It took Romy 10 hours to deliver 15 puppies.
Romy is now the mother of 10 girl puppies and 5 boy puppies. Romy had no complications during the births and she was able to severe all of the umbilical cords herself.
The birth of the puppies was just the beginning though. Romy would have to take care of the puppies until they could fend for themselves. However, Romy didn’t have enough milk to feed all of her puppies. So Natasha and Alicia took turns round the clock helping Romy by bottle feeding the puppies.
Romy is doing a fantastic job with the puppies. Even though this is her first litter her owners say she is a natural. She knows just what to do for her new babies.
Natasha and Alicia unfortunately could not keep all of the puppies so they sold 14 of them to the best homes that they could find.
