This year the national Take Your Dog To Work Day will be Friday, June 26, 2020. This amazing holiday occurs the Friday after Father’s Day. This is a massive celebration of our love and companionship with our dogs. The purpose of this unique holiday is to hopefully encourage more people to adopt dogs from shelters and humane societies.
Amazon has taken the holiday a step further because it basically celebrates the dog human connection on a daily basis. Since the founding of Amazon dogs have been welcome in the Amazon offices. It seems that early on in the life of Amazon a husband and wife who worked for the company wanted to bring in their dog Rufus, a Corgi. Once they brought Rufus in he was an instant hit with the other employees. Rufus became the unofficial mascot at Amazon, and was instrumental in the early days. Employees would celebrate the launch of new pages on the website by using Rufus’ paw to click the mouse to launch the new pages.
In honor of Rufus there is even a building at the Seattle campus named in his honor, and pictures of Rufus are all over the campus.
Currently their are over 6,000 registered pups at Amazon’s business headquarters in Seattle, Washington. Employees are encouraged to bring in their dogs to work. Before an employee can bring in their best canine pal they will first have to talk to their supervisor and team members in their immediate area. The purpose of this is to ensure that everyone is comfortable with the new dog coming in to work. Once the employee gets the ok they have to register their dog to come to work.
Amazon really caters to their doggy employees by having dog treats at reception desks around the headquarters area. There are also special areas like the doggie deck on the top floor of one of the buildings where dogs are free to run around and socialize with other dogs. This area has a fire hydrant, poop stations, poop areas, and dog water fountains. There is also a off-leash dog park that employees can take their dogs to enjoy.
Amazon also does its part to help with animal welfare. Each year they send employees to help various animal shelters and organizations.
