The fine folks at Animal Aid Unlimited in India were summoned to the rescue of Ramu. Ramu was suffering from a very advanced mange that caused his skin to grow into a kind of hard crusty gravel.
The rescuers moved in slowly and started by giving the Ramu something to eat. He eagerly ate the bits of food. From the video we find out that mange is a very common disease in India for dogs to get, and it is usually curable.
After spending some time to make him comfortable with their presence the rescuers wrapped Ramu in a blanket, and took him to the hospital for immediate treatment.
The rescuers observed that Ramu seemed completely heartbroken. He seemed as if he were ready to just give up and die. He was so sullen and withdrawn. His head hung heavily, and he barely moved.
The rescuers continued to pet and caress him and show him love and affection. They were careful to be gentle with the poor dog. His skin was hard like gravel and it was cracking open and bleeding.
Ramu was severely dehydrated and would require IV fluids. Ramu was in such bad shape that he could muster any energy, and just sat there as the medical team attended to him.
Next they began to apply medicated lotion all over his body to soften the crusty skin. Over many weeks the staff gave medicated baths to Ramu to continue removing the crusty skin.
The baths along with much needed good food and plenty of love powered Ramu through his healing and recovery.
At one point the staff observed that Ramu really just seemed to be resigned to die. But their consistent love and affection gave him strength to begin to lift his head. Eventually he would know happiness again.
Now today Ramu is completely unrecognizable. The crusty, gravely, grey skin has been replaced with a shiny black and white spotted coat of fur. Ramu runs with his head held high and seems as happy as can be.
