My wife loves to snuggle up with our dog on the couch while watching TV, and she absolutely loves to snuggle up to her little furry baby at night in bed. I use to think that was a little weird until I talked to other dog owners and learned that they enjoy sleeping with their dogs too. Well it turns out that sleeping with your dog has benefits.
Studies show that about 50% of dog owners will allow their dogs to sleep in bed with them at night. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic that number has almost surely increased. Like my wife others are seeking comfort and cuddling from their dogs during this usual time where a lot of us have been shut inside for long periods.
Dr. Michelle Martinez, a Veterinarian, confirms that oxytocin, released by the body when you cuddle with your dog, cause a sensation of relaxation, calmness and decreases the feelings of loneliness and depression. It also helps people who are suffering from insomnia to sleep with their dogs.
Many owners like to have their dogs sleep with them to provide them with a sense of calm and security at night. People feel comfortable knowing that their dog is a protector who will notice things at night that they might miss.
For now experts are in agreement that sleeping with your dog during the COVID-19 pandemic is safe. There is no evidence that humans can contract coronavirus from dogs.
The best thing that you can do is to ensure that your dog is healthy. You don’t want to sleep with your dog if he has fleas or ticks.
Dr. Martinez recommends that you clean your dog before allowing him in bed with you. Give your dog a wipe down and definitely clean his paws after a walk outside and right before bedtime.
