Harding’s Heroes is a segment that runs on WCVB Channel 5 Boston News in the late afternoon. This particular segment focuses on an incredible pit bull, Lilly.
The segment starts off showing Lilly chasing a soccer ball. What is immediately incredible is that Lilly is chasing the ball with only 3 legs. Lilly moves really well for a 12 year old dog that is missing her right front leg.
Lilly’s claim to fame comes from the fact that Lilly saved her owner, David, mother’s life. David said that his mother had fallen on the train tracks.
The train operator said that as the train was moving down the track he noticed a mass on the tracks. As the train got closer the operator realized that it was a person and a dog on the tracks.
Unfortunately the train was moving to fast for the train operator to stop the train. The train operator said that he felt a thump. However it wasn’t David’s mother, but his dog Lilly that had been hit and run over by the train.
Lilly was able to get David’s mother out of harm’s way, but Lilly was badly wounded. She required multiple surgeries. She lost her leg and her pelvis was badly injured.
After 3 years since the accident Lilly has had more than 3 books written about her and the incident. She’s been immortalized in a painting by an artist from the UK. Lilly also has her own stuffed animal. The stuffed animal fittingly has a missing right limb just like Lilly. Lilly also has almost a half million Facebook followers.
Lilly has been involved in raising money for abandoned hurt and sick animals. Lilly’s own non-profit has helped to save pit bulls and other dogs from shelters and abusive situations.
Her owner David says that “She’s pretty awesome!” We think so too!
