A heartbreaking video of a woman pleading for her dog’s freedom has been circulating online. She was asking the police officers to leave the dog behind while they are trying to bring her husband with the small dog in his arms to the nearest police station. The unfortunate incident happened in Lima during the fifth day of Peru’s nationwide lockdown.
The country is taking the coronavirus threat seriously and has been implementing very strict prevention measures to stop the spread of the virus. This is clearly seen by the overwhelming number of masked police officers on the street that apprehended the man with the dog. He seemed cooperative at first but hesitated a bit when the dog’s welfare was brought up. He later went with the cops when he was told that the situation could worsen.
The woman was on the upper balcony of their home while the husband was calmly escorted to the police car. She was clearly distressed as she was screaming for the cops not to take her dog away. She pleaded that the dog should be spared from the stressful situation and that the cops should refrain from touching her beloved pet.
The local news later reported that the dog was immediately returned to the wife while the police took the husband to the nearest police precinct. During the arrest, the man has been heard telling his wife that he knew he would get arrested. He told the reporters that he walked the dog for more than an hour, which the police likely considered as an offense.
Peru has allowed some outdoor activities during the lockdown, including dog walking. However, they have been strictly enforcing a curfew between 8 PM to 4 AM. The man’s violation was not clear, and the specific time of the incident when the arrest was made was not specified. But Peru is very serious in limiting the possible casualties of the pandemic after confirming almost 500 positive cases and nine deaths during the last week of March.
